International Provenance Research Day
Held under the motto "Researching provenance in museums, libraries and archives", the International Provenance Research Day will take place for the fourth time on April 13, 2022. According to the Arbeitskreis für Provenienzforschung, nearly 100 cultural institutions in Europe and the United States will participate, providing visitors with insights into the methods of the research field. In addition to cultural property from colonial contexts, the focus is primarily on Nazi persecution-related seizures.
Austrian institutions will also open their doors and offer events. Provenance researcher Monika Löscher and archivist Susanne Hehenberger (both from the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna) will lead a tour of the Neue Burg, using objects and sources to reveal the origin stories of questionable or looted objects. At the Haus der Geschichte Österreich, curator Stefan Benedik, in cooperation with the Commission for Provenance Research, will also offer a guided tour of the collection and will address the question of how museums can act responsibly by returning objects.
