Description
Distaff. The stick from another distaff has been later adapted and glued on. Board with carved out multi-arched border and fine chip carving on the front: geometric patterns, zigzag lines under a stylized tree with roots, framed by two Amphisbaena in mirror image. Above them is a field with stylized flowers with four petals, wavy lines, a pair of birds in mirror image and two vertical Amphisbaena. Above them is a carved out cross and at the top a female figure whose two plaits are on the reverse of the board. On the reverse is a carved inscription with an incomplete date. ΔHMH. K.KAIMAKAMHΣ19. There is also a spike on the reverse to secure the wad of sheep’s fleece. Lefkada, Greece.
